In the meantime the core storage and backup requirements in Auckland can be addressed as the likely solutions can be integrated into the overall strategy as it is prepared.

The following are the requirements for additional storage in Auckland;

• We need a solution that will scale to 10,000 GB if it is to have a projected life of 3-4 years.
• The solution should support the connection of at least three servers (File, Database and Exchange).
• The solution should allow for the clustering of some or all of these servers.
• The solution needs to support direct attached tape drives for future expansion.
• The solution must support fully redundant hardware and multiple connection paths.
• The solution must be from a recognised vendor and fully supported within New Zealand.
• The solution must be certified for use with Windows 2003 server.


There are many products and possible solutions in the market place that could address these requirements but it would be impossible for us to list them all here or evaluate each one. To expedite the evaluation only two options have been selected which represent known solutions that we can make informed judgements about.
