There is a never a good time for things to go wrong. But for a real estate company, that works overtime on weekends, 6.30 on a Friday night is particularly bad. Of course, it happened to be Friday 13th!
The client's SQL Server power supply blew up on Friday night. At 6.30 in the evening, getting parts arranged would normally be difficult, maybe even impossible. This server had come out of it's 3 years warranty just a few weeks ago in June, but the client had purchased an extended warranty, with 24x7 coverage and 4 hours response.
Without the warranty, we'd have been unable to get parts until Monday, and even then it would have been the luck of the draw if they were available. If the warranty had been the standard 8x5, we'd at least have been able to get the parts, but not until Monday - costing them a weekend's work.
But this client had invested in the right warranty option for them. With the 24x7 coverage, and four hour response, we got the parts and had the server running again within a couple of hours. The warranty cost about the same as the part they needed, and they had very limited impact as a result.
A fantastic service - well done HP, and an excellent outcome for our client, mitigating the risk for very limited outlay, a risk that turned out to be very real.
