How far have computers come?

Back in the 1980's (remember then?), IBM ruled the roost.  The personal PC came to the market and dominated all before it.  Competitors rose to meet the challenge.  Locally, you may remember the Excell brand of PCs.  But internationally, the big player was Compaq.

They had a challenge.  They had to legitimise the idea of using their "clones" as an alternative to IBM.  Their stategy was to position as a premium supplier and innovator.

I remember these portable machines, in particular the IBM "Luggable" which looked very much like the Compaq and weighed so much it probably had its own gravity field.  But the ability to be able to transport a computer and set it up easily and work anywhere was quite something!  Pull out the old floppy disks and carry on working!

Haven't things come far since!  To remind yourself how far, we've found one of the better advertisements online, on the popular video site "Youtube" here.
