New trick used by the Nasties

The latest trick being used by various nasties on the internet is a "pop up message" that looks like a legitimate computer alert.  We are all familiar with popup messages which appear just above the clock (usually in the bottom right hand corner of the screen).  The two most common ones are an alert that updates are ready to install or that you have an instant message. Websites are now using identical messages which appear in the bottom right hand corner of the webpage.  The aim is to get you to click on it and install their application or give them access to your instant messaging.

Instant Messaging (Windows Live Messenger):

Lock this down to accept messages from only those contacts you have added.  If you get a popup from someone you don't know, ignore it as it won't be a real alert.  To lock this down, go into the options and choose Privacy, then tick “Only people on my allow list can see my status and send me messages”.  There are two boxes : make sure “All Others” is in the "Block List" box and only those who you know are in the "Allow" list box.  If you need help with Windows Live Messenger or similar products such as Skype.  Ask your Engineer, Account Manager or call us on 09 379 8200.

Automatic Updates:

Kinetics likes to use a product called WSUS which automates the updates and gives some central control.   With WSUS, the option of installing updates also appears when you are shutting down your computer.  Waiting till you shut down is a much better option for installing updates.  It does not slow your PC down as you are working and, for larger updates, it gives the PC time to install whilst not taking that time away from your working day.  Some setups do not allow for the use of WSUS, in many cases we can still use a Group Policy to control the automatic update settings or we may need to do it manually on each PC.  Both your Account Manager and your Engineer are always looking out for the best solution for your company.  But we encourage you to ask them for advice.
