Thanks to Microsoft NZ, Kinetics clients were treated to an early exploration of the latest edition of Microsoft Small Business Server.
Since the 2003 version was released, there have been significant changes in the computing world. Security threats have evolved, internet applications have become more prevalent, and business needs have also evolved. The software many business runs is more demanding, growing in sophistication as the small businesses also grow.
Small business is dynamic. Their competitive advantage is often flexibility and nimbleness. They need a computing system that can respond as to their changing demands.
They also need a computing system they can take for-granted. It needs to be rugged and reliable, ever more capable, but also easy to look after so the business isn’t distracted away from its core capabilities.
The computing challenge for small business is formidable. The days of a couple of old PCs being sufficient, tied together with a bit of kiwi ingenuity and a lot of luck are over. With so much of business being reliant on their computing, it’s simply too important to cut corners.
That’s why we are so excited about SBS2008. We’ve spent a lot of time getting to know this newest version and understanding how to get the best from it.
Key advantages of SBS 2008 include :-
-
64Bit. Taking advantage of the latest server hardware and removing old restrictions (such as 4Gb RAM) = a better performance ceiling
-
Exchange 2007. It’s more secure, with improved mobility support, enhanced Sharepoint integration and even better web access tools. There are innumerable significant evolutionary improvements which all mean that the software most of us more than anything else, Outlook, is even better than ever.
-
Mobility. SBS2008 offers improved management tools including the ability to remotely wipe of lost PDAs. As mobile email becomes more important, you can be assured that the security available gives you the reassurance that your valuable business data remains safe.
-
Security. In the five or years since SBS2003 was released, the world has changed and the threats have evolved. Rather than using server software with five years of patches and updates layered on it, you can start with a ground-up secure platform designed with the latest security built in.
-
Sharepoint. SBS2008 with Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 out of the box and ready to go.
-
Built on Windows Server 2008. This means that the advantages and flexibility of 2008, such as “powershell” are available to help make sure your server meet your needs as closely as possible
-
Following customer feedback, SQL licensing (Premium edition only) has been revised. SBS2008 Premium now provides for a second “Line of Business” server. There are a range of uses available for this, with SQL Database being the most anticipated. SBS2008 gives the choice of running SQL 2005 or SQL 2008 – a huge step forward from the cut-down SQL support of previous SBS versions
-
Evolutionary changes to Web workplace make access to remote tools easier and more approachable to all authorised users.
Our view
There is no need for small businesses to be 'second class citizens'. They need the same reliability and capability that a large corporate demands.
SBS2008, installed and maintained by Kinetics Group (with our small business specialist awards) offers exactly that!
